In addition to Izzy, I would sometimes run into Dave Bromberg and his then-girlfriend Trudy, and of course later on it would mostly be the guys in my bluegrass band - but heck, the first time I'd ever heard Bill Monroe was at Dave Grisman's apartment on St. I would cruise the shops (mainly Matt Umanov and Fretted Instruments, since I was an acoustic player back then), do the occasional opening set at The Gaslight or Gerde's, sometimes stay up all night and sometimes crash on Izzy Young's floor, then go pick in Washington Square on Sunday. I was living on Long Island (Massapequa Park) and would come into the Village on weekends via the LIRR and the subway.
